Keeping records is a form of household care.

Almanac Ash was founded to help households in Kuala Lumpur put their possessions and documents into clear, printed order — work that belongs to the household and remains with it.

Our Story

How Almanac Ash came to be

Almanac Ash grew from a straightforward observation: many households in Kuala Lumpur hold significant objects and important documents without any clear written record of them. When a household member passes, when a property changes hands, or simply when a household wants to understand what it has accumulated over decades — the absence of good records creates real difficulty.

The founders, Azizah Ramli and Wei-Lin Tan, had both encountered this problem in their own families. Azizah had spent years as an archivist with a Kuala Lumpur cultural foundation; Wei-Lin had worked in household estate administration before moving into independent consulting. In 2017, they combined their experience to offer something neither had found available in the city: a quiet, professional service focused entirely on helping the household know and record what it holds.

The name comes from the almanac itself — a modest, reliable book of records printed for practical use. That is what Almanac Ash produces: modest, reliable, printed records the household keeps and uses.

Our Mission

"To bring order to what households hold, through careful work, printed records, and a method that belongs entirely to the household."

Patient: Sessions move at the household's pace, not ours.

Printed: Every engagement ends with physical records the household keeps.

Neutral: We record; we do not advise, value, or act on what we catalog.

Discrete: What we learn about a household remains within that working relationship.

How We Work

Our working standards

Each of these principles shapes how we plan a session, how we behave in a household, and how we handle what we learn.

Archival-Grade Materials

Labels, folders, and printed booklets use acid-free, archival-grade materials. We do not produce output on standard office paper. The record should outlast the session by many years.

Household Confidentiality

We do not discuss the contents of one household's records with any other party. Information gathered during sessions is used only to produce the household's own printed output.

Consistent Photographic Standards

All item photographs are taken in consistent format and light conditions, then printed at a standard size within the booklet. Photographs are not edited, filtered, or stored on external platforms.

Written Records in Plain Language

Every entry is written in clear, plain language the household can read and amend. We do not use technical or legal terminology that would require specialist interpretation.

No Action on Behalf of the Household

We catalog and organize. We do not draft legal documents, make valuations, contact institutions, or take any action using the household's records or information.

Follow-Up Included

Every inventory session includes a written follow-up note one month after the session. Annual refresh subscribers receive a written summary at the close of each programme year.

What We Believe

The value of knowing what a household holds

Most Kuala Lumpur households have accumulated objects and documents across years and generations without any clear written record. The household knows roughly what it holds, but the details — when something was acquired, what it is, where a particular paper has been filed — exist only in memory, and memory is not distributed evenly across the people who make up a household.

A written inventory, carefully kept, serves the household in several practical ways. It brings members into alignment about what the household holds and what each person's connection to particular objects or documents is. It creates a reference point for the household's own administrative purposes — not for any external institution, but for the household's internal clarity.

The same is true of a document catalog. Many households find that their papers are distributed across multiple rooms, folders, and boxes, and that different members hold different pieces of the overall picture. A single, organized catalog — printed, stored in one place, and available to the household — removes a significant source of difficulty and uncertainty.

At Almanac Ash, we consider this work a form of household care: thoughtful, unhurried, and focused on the household's own benefit. We do not offer advice about what to do with what we find. We offer the labor and the method — and the household keeps everything that results.
